Menopause is the cessation of menstruation for a year or more.  It occurs when the ovaries cease to ovulate.  Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 40 and 55.  However, it is preceded 10-15 years by a “perimenopausal” period, during which time levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate and are often less than optimal.  These declining hormone levels are associated with distinct and troublesome symptoms.  Symptoms of low estrogen may include fatigue, decreased sexual drive, painful intercourse, depression, hot flashes, sweats, menstrual irregularities, headaches, hair/skin changes, facial hair, breast changes, weight change, and joint aches. Symptoms of low progesterone may include nervousness, difficulty sleeping, irritability, excessive emotions, swelling, and excessive menstruation. Every woman’s body is unique and different. Genetics, diet, lifestyle, other medical conditions and medications all can affect this process.

The treatment for perimenopause and menopause is confusing and fraught with controversy. From time to time, a woman’s hormonal needs may shift, necessitating an adjustment in hormone dosing. It is important for a woman to develop a trusting relationship with a knowledgeable doctor that can help her weigh the risks versus the benefits of hormone replacement therapy. At Elan Medical, we stay abreast of the medical literature and can assist in developing an individualized treatment plan that is right for you.
