Somatopause refers to a decline in the blood levels of human growth hormone (HGH, somatotropin) and its byproducts. HGH secretion starts to decrease in the mid 20s and decreases approximately 14% per decade. There is ample evidence to support the medical benefit and safety of growth hormone replacement therapy in growth hormone deficient adults. In August of 1996, the FDA approved the use of HGH in growth hormone deficient adults. Studies following patients for 10 years have replicated the benefits and shown no long term ill effects.
